Have you ever thought about how powerful the words we use are? Our words have great power. They are like “spells” we cast on our world. They shape how we see ourselves, our relationships, how high and how far we go in our career, they determine our success or failure.
How do you feel when you say the following strings of words out loud? Let’s try a few “spells” together:
“I hate you”
How do these words make you feel? Irritated, angry, gut-level disgust, bile in your stomach, can you feel your face getting scrunched up? When we say words like this we are condemning and even placing a “curse” on the other person.
“I like you”
How do these words make you feel? It is a good feeling, light, airy, easy, nice, non-committal, no strings. It is a complete statement with nothing more to be said.
“I love you”
Wow. There is a profoundness in those three words. Say it again, You feel a certain level of power and connection, oneness, wholeness, commitment, deep affection, attachment, sense of permanency, even a sense of the eternal. it is union and unity, it is life itself, it sums up and encapsulates the very purpose and meaning of life (at least in my own humble view).
How did you feel as you said those statements? Do you see the power in the words we use on how we feel? I’m convinced, that the words we use have a direct impact on us, our mood, our feelings, our interactions, and our character. Our life day-to-day, and in the long term, is shaped by our words.
