Scott Smith is an entrepreneur, author, and managing member of the C Squared Fund. He was an early pioneer in structured finance on Wall Street, originating the first mixed-property commercial mortgage conduit and securing a billion-dollar line of credit from DLJ. He developed the model for securitizing loans that became the cornerstone for mortgage-backed securities today. Sheri Smith and I have known each other since college, and we actually worked together for several years while we were coming up professionally. She’s always impressed me as one of the smartest people I know. She’s done graduate work at Georgetown, she worked for Hillary Clinton for a time, and now she’s the founder and CEO of The Indigo Project, an education company that does extensive assessment and consulting work in the education space both at the high school level and college level. I wanted to have Sheri on the podcast for two reasons one because she’s a longtime friend and I’ve been wanting to catch up with her for years, and two because she has unique insight into the education system at large, and I think we all can agree that the education system needs to change, and I also think the pandemic showed the cracks and faults in the education system much more clearly. Sheri and her company have a unique approach to working within the education system to help change it from the inside out. Her method is unique, her perspective is hopeful, and her approach may be just what we need to change the education system from within. How You Know a Reward is a Good Reward

I’m a huge fan of productivity, but I’m an even bigger fan of giving yourself rewards when you’ve really earned them like overcoming procrastination and taking action on something you’ve been putting off. What follows is a list of ideas to reward yourself in a healthy, fun, and sustainable way. Admittedly, these are small rewards that have particular appeal to me personally. So what may be a reward to me, may be the complete opposite for you. The idea here is to help spark your own ideas for good self-rewards.

Before COVID, my daughters were both competitive swimmers. One day I was volunteering as a timer at one of their divisional swim meets. While standing in the lane getting more and more wet with every passing heat (i.e. a group of swimmers who are lining to compete for their race), I saw hundreds of kids line up to swim that day. There were two children in particular, both were the same age, both came from the same socio-economic strata, both had about the same athletic level, same team, same coach, and even had the same color hair. But there was a key difference in the two children.

Embrace and Analyze the Setback

One of the best things you can do for your career after a setback is to accept your mistakes. Sure, some of your circumstances can be drawn up to bad luck and other factors out of your control. But more than likely, you could have made better decisions somewhere along the way.

Embrace the failure. Then, thoroughly go through it and figure out how you could have done things differently. That way, you can truly learn from your mistakes and put yourself in a better position down the road.

Take Control of Your Finances

You also need to take whatever steps necessary to gain back control of your finances. This might mean coming up with a plan for tackling debt, revisiting your tax planning strategies, meeting with a financial advisor, and/or doing anything else that helps improve your current and future standing. This is critical, whether you’re trying to mend your current business or set the stage for a new one.

Look into Forming an LLC

Another part of bouncing back from failure is revisiting your business structure (or carefully deciding which one to go with for your next business). Though there are several options, many small business owners find that an LLC makes the most sense for them. Not only does forming an LLC require less paperwork and provide more flexibility than a corporation, but it offers many things that a sole proprietorship does not, such as personal asset protection and certain tax advantages. Brainstorm

All successful businesses are started from an idea. If you’re looking to start a new business, and you’ve come to terms with and have analyzed your past setbacks, it’s time to start thinking up ideas for your next venture. Set aside some time where you can focus and get inspired, and jot down any thoughts or ideas that come to mind, even if they seem small and incomplete.

Research the Market

When you have a few (or one or two) ideas that you think could have potential, start researching. Look into the market to see if there is a demand for the product or service you’re considering — locally, nationally, and worldwide. See if any other companies are offering a similar product/service. Find out what other companies are doing to experience success. This will not only help you discern whether or not your business idea is viable; it will also help you to come up with a cohesive, comprehensive strategy for moving forward.

Failure is part of the entrepreneurial journey, and it’s where you’ll get much of the tenacity and maturity to help you in the long term. Embrace your setbacks, and analyze them so that you can learn from your mistakes. Take back control of your finances, and consider forming an LLC so that you will have a strong foundation moving forward. Getting a business degree

One of the silver linings of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it’s easier than ever to get a degree online, opening up far more education options for people with disabilities. While in-person courses can be helpful for some, there are often access issues for disabled students. With online classes, people with disabilities can pursue a number of degree options, including business.

A business degree is a versatile educational path that opens up a number of career options for graduates. There are a number of different degree options within most business schools: students can choose between business management, IT management, healthcare management, marketing, accounting, and human resources.

It’s a good idea to have an idea of what industry interests you most, whether it’s computer science or healthcare, and choose a program that will allow you to pursue those interests. If you’re interested in starting a lucrative career, a business degree in IT management will help raise your earning potential.

Finding the right internship

One of the best ways to supplement your learning and get real-world experience is through an internship. Many universities will have programs and connections designed to help students find internships, but if you have an idea of a company where you’d like to work, it’s a great idea to reach out directly.

If you’re having a hard time finding an internship that suits you, try out these websites to connect with companies. LinkedIn can be a great option, and will also allow you to network and build your own profile to attract employers. Glassdoor is another option for finding internships, and it will also help you learn more about each company’s reputation and average salary.

Landing your first job

For some lucky grads, internships can turn into first jobs. However, if you’re planning to start job hunting the minute you graduate, keep in mind that it may take some time to find the right fit.

For graduates with disabilities, it’s important to find a job that suits your needs. For some, this will mean having the opportunity to work remotely. However, if a job you’re interested in requires you to work in-person, be sure to learn about how the company will support your needs, whether it’s supplying a screen reader or giving you flexibility in your schedule.

If you’re a new graduate and need some direction for finding your first job, connect with the career services department at your university for help. They can usually assist with developing your application materials, whether it’s writing your resume or crafting your first cover letter. Do as much networking as possible during this time, and attend any industry conferences to learn as much as possible about your new career field.

Getting a business degree is a great way to launch a lucrative career. It’s important to choose a degree in an industry that interests you, whether it’s in IT or healthcare management. Aim to do at least one internship during your studies, and be sure to stay in touch with any connections you make during your studies. And when you graduate, find a company that will be supportive of your disability needs.

I think we can all agree that 2020 was an unexpected year on so many levels. We saw a once in a century global pandemic, we saw an economic collapse, where in the United States alone more than 33 Million jobs vanished within a matter of weeks, we saw George Floyd and the social justice protests and riots that came about as a result. In the midst of all that, we also lived through a highly contentious presidential election.
